‘I have terminal cancer. And I’m dying in a yearish.’ – LA Times

A heartbreakingly unsentimental piece by Melinda Welsh, long-time editor of the Sacramento News & Review, on her illness and its brutal implications. Thank you to an impressive woman who shows the deep bravery of honesty.

The enormity of the news didn’t sink in fully, not at first, even after my doctor uttered the words: “I’m sorry, we did find cancer.” My husband, Dave, and I had only the faintest sense that evening that our lives had been hijacked forever.

Go Get Catamaran

Pages from CAT11-17a-with cover.jpgA great, relatively new magazine out of Santa Cruz, beautifully put together. I’ve spotted it at Barnes and Noble in Sacramento and Newsbeat in Davis. It can be found around Northern California, and maybe even outside (plus their website, of course). You can still get a copy of Issue 11, which includes (in addition to me) novelist Christian Kiefer and inauguration poet Richard Blanco.
